Starter Long Short

How do I know whether my 83 Yamaha Virago is a short or long shaft starter.?

Because it’s an ’83,,,:)

’81~83 750′s & 920′s
’84 & ’85 700′s

They all used Short Shaft

Yamaha Part # 42X-81800-6000
Superceded to # 42X-81890-00

The Long Shaft is Yamaha # 5A8-81800-10-00
’86~87 700′s
’86~’97 750′s
’84~97 1000′s & 1100′s

LONG Shafts didn’t appear till ’84 on any of the bikes,,far as I know

Those bikes have a bad history of starter probs.
Several “solutions” were worked out over the years,,,most not very effective.
Some were.

Surf around the ‘net and dig up info on the various “fixes”,,,or upgraded/aftermarket replacement Starter Assemblies,,,,BEFORE buying a replacement
