One Doctor

One Doctor
It is a physician who belong to a single group of physicians from a single, possibly better?

We've been trying to list a few primary physicians (medical internal or family practice) in our area. Some doctors belong to a single medical group where physicians others belong to various groups of doctors. Can we make assumptions based on this – example – the doctor who belong to various medical groups can not get enough patients in a group of doctors and what therefore, needs to list himself in several medical groups. Similarly we can also assume the doctor who belong to only one medical group is capable of sustain itself with a sufficient number of patients in the doctors just and therefore possibly a little better?

I would not assume so. How many patients do not necessarily mean that the doctor is good. I would highly suggest you go to the internist, not a doctor of family medicine

A doctor finds out the hard way that there's more to medicine than skill in the operating theater in this emotional drama. Jack McKee (William Hurt) is a gifted but arrogant surgeon who cares little about the emotional welfare of his patients and is little more than a benign stranger to his wife Anne (Christine Lahti) and his son Nicky (Charlie Korsmo). Jack has been suffering from a nagging cough for some time, and when he begins coughing up blood one morning, he finally allows another doctor to take a look at him. The doctor discovers that Jack has a malignant tumor in his throat that could rob him of the ability to speak, or even kill him. Suddenly, Jack is a patient instead of a doctor, and he learns first hand about the long stretches in the waiting room, the indignity of filling out pointless forms, and the callous attitude of the professional medical community. Jack also gets to know June (Elizabeth Perkins), a terminal cancer patient whose joyous embrace of life as her time draws to a close is an inspiration to him. Restored to health, Jack is determined to be a more caring healer and strives to be a better husband and father, but his new lease on life also earns him an enemy in fellow surgeon Murray (Mandy Patinkin), who wants Jack to lie under oath for him in a major malpractice case; and a new respect for Eli (Adam Arkin), an ear-nose-throat man he used to ridicule for his empathetic treatment of his patients. The Doctor was based on the memoir of real-life surgeon Ed Rosenbaum, entitled A Taste of My Own Medicine. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This four-CD set, containing 122 songs (23 of them previously unreleased) cut between 1950 and 1966 for RCA, Groove, Okeh, and Columbia is, literally, the best of Piano Red, and may be the best box in the entire Bear Family catalog. This is about as good as piano blues and R&B got, and also some of the best piano-based rock & roll you'll ever hear -- rivaling anything that Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard ever cut -- with barely a second-rate track. Even the multiple versions of his signature tune, "Right String but the Wrong Yo-Yo," are welcomed, from its lean, mean piano-bass-drums original 1950 version, to the live 1955 rendition and the broader 1961 remake (at the "Mr. Moonlight" session), because they're each different enough to justify their presence. And, yet, the most amazing thing about the 16 years covered on these four discs is the consistency of the music and performances -- Red hardly changed at all until the early '60s, always giving his audience a good show whether he was making records or playing live. The second and third discs are arguably the best parts of the set, with Red at the peak of his prowess as a pianist and singer. He made the jump into rock & roll more easily than most bluesmen of his age, with the result that his music from this period is as solid as anything else he ever did. Still later, on the fourth disc, once he moves into a more produced, pop-oriented R&B sound, he holds up almost as well. The sound is excellent, the notes are thorough, and the $100 list price of this 122-song set makes it proportionately more attractive than any $15/15-song best-of on Red that might ever show up (and there isn't one). ~ Bruce Eder, All Music GuidePerformers: The Four Students - Choir, Chorus, Vocals; George Adams - Guitar; Daniel W. During a time when America's families are experiencing a revived interest in the histories of their own and other families, One Doctor's Story chronicles the making of John F. J. Clark, Jr. In his own words, Dr. Clark traces his life from his childhood in Charleston, West Virginia, to his successful medical career in Washington, D.C. There was a huge difference in the environments of Charleston and Washington, D.C., but what the two cities had in common--complete racial segregation--meant that Black people in both cities experienced rampant racism. Through the foundation laid down by his parents and the support of his siblings, One Doctor's Story is about overcoming obstacles and exceeding expectations. Educated in the segregated school system of the south, he graduated from Ohio State University and received his medical degree from Howard University. Despite suffering from dyslexia and institutional segregation, his work to eradicate the disparities in maternal health made him a world renowned OBGYN who has given lectures as far away as China and Russia.

p iThe Addict/i opens a window on the very private world of prescription drug addiction, revealing the harrowing and riveting story of a young woman whose life has been taken over by an impulse that she can't control and a need that she can't extinguish. /p p Lucy's first appointment with Dr. Michael Stein was on a sunny day in April, and the minute she sat down she said, I'm here for your program, beginning a series of intimate encounters during the course of a year that took her back to the origins of her addiction and unraveled a life driven by compulsion and the constant pursuit of the next pill. iThe Addict/i follows Lucy from the start of her treatment, through relapse, to her eventual long-term recovery, including her breakup with a destructive boyfriend whose own addiction to drugs surpassed hers. This is an unforgettable tale of a young woman living on the edge but determined to take control of her life. /p p Here also is the deeply personal account of a doctor on the front lines of an epidemic. In this masterful work, Michael Stein brings in other patients whose experiences are like Lucy's but in many ways are completely different. Dr. Stein explains what doctors are thinking and feeling about addiction, and how they make difficult decisions with difficult patients. He also aims to change the way we think about addiction, arguing that it should be treated as we treat diabetes or high blood pressureas a disease within the medical system. /p p This affecting and thought-provoking book will resonate with anyone struggling with chemical dependence. In iThe Addict/i, Dr. Stein creates a portrait of the intimate bond between one patient and one doctor, a relationship that is profoundly moving and incredibly compelling. /pulliISBN13: 9780061368134liCondition: NEWliNotes: Brand New from Publisher. Here, for the first time, is an in-depth exploration of the Doctor Who films that almost were, including detailed synopses and extracts from the scripts themselves, interviews with the writers, behind-the-scenes articles explaining how these productions came to be, why the contemplated films were never shot, and the role played by stars such as Leonard Nimoy and Steven Spielberg. But this shirt is dedicated that certain percentage of our customers (larger than the distribution in the general populace... we checked 'cause we're stats geeks) who have earned the title through a Ph.D. program. Those poor individuals, who, after they're introduced as "Doctor Suchandsuch," are immediately beset by strangers who want to tell them about their ailments. Did you know Doc Ock actually turned into a super villain after being cornered one too many times by people asking him to look at a rash? True story. "not that kind of doctor" printed in white on a black, 100% cotton t-shirt.

The Doctor's Wife The Doctor's Wife
$13.98

The role of the Japanese woman in modern society still retains many of the characteristics that it had in the late eighteenth century, when this novel takes place. In those days, the life of a woman, whether married or single, was one of unending drudgery and toil. Reward or recognition came only indirectly, through the success of the male members of the family. Thus, this novel is really two stories: on the one hand, the successful medical career of Hanaoka Seishu, the first doctor in the world to perform surgery for breast cancer under a general anesthetic; on the other hand, the lives of his wife and his mother, who supported him with stoic resignation, even to the extent of finally volunteering to be used as guinea pigs in his experiments. Kae, the wife, joins the household of the local doctor as the bride of his son, Hanaoka Seishu, who is still away pursuing his medical studies in Kyoto. Her mother-in-law, Otsugi, is both beautiful and extremely proud of the tradition of the doctor's family. Though their relationship is one of affection at first, it declines into tension and eventually into bitter competitiveness and hatred, fostered by the claustrophobic social customs of the time. The two women-the wife who struggles to adapt to a new household and gain the affection of her unfamiliar husband, and the over possessive mother-in-law dedicated to the fulfillment of her son's ambitions-vie with one another to serve one man. Kae suffers the most, for the new anesthetic that the doctor tries on her has devastating results. Readers of The Doctor's Wife will find a tender and compassionate tale about a woman of great strength and courage, as well as an impelling account of Japanese society and the role of women in it.

Doctor Marigold Doctor Marigold

Dickens is considered to be one of the greatest British writers of all times. He was a social activist who wrote plays and novels during the Victorian period. His most famous novels include Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, and David Copperfield. Doctor Marigold was originally published in All the Year Round in 1865. A quote from the Hesperus book jacket reads, Named after the doctor who delivered him as a baby, Doctor Marigold is a poor hawker who, after a dreadful turn of events, finds happiness with his adopted daughter Sophy. She is a deaf mute, and to help her learn to read and communicate, Doctor Marigold 'prescribes' her various stories, which he collects into a book while she is at school. These prescriptions, written by Dickens and five other distinguished Victorian writers, are tales of adventure and romance, featuring thieves, kidnappings and witchcraft. Together, they form a wonderful selection of stories that are told with the clever wit and brilliant description that characterise Dickens' writing.

In this collection of twenty-seven short and long stories (some very brief, one a novella), Robert Kelly once again conjures—as previously in A Transparent Tree—an array of imaginary realms that touch upon our own. These are fictions that proceed from language into psychological epiphanies, sometimes of a very humourous nature, traversing the divisions between external and internal experience, and capturing the dimensions of desire. With its great subtlety and generous wisdom, Doctor of Silence is a bravura performance by one of America's major writers.

In addition, Sunless is careful. He avoids flies, just like he avoids angels. Both species have a tendency to spy on him. But there's something he keeps meaning to ask his doctor: what have they done with his father? Sunless may be crazy, but so is the system that treats him. One of them is going to break.

As repayment for services rendered by his father, young New Jerseyite Frank Siena (Danny Nucci) is put through medical school in the U.S. and Italy by powerful mafia don Nicola Dellarusso (Paul Sorvino). Upon becoming a doctor, Siena dutifully returns the favor by giving body and soul to the organization, covering up murders, tending to the mob wounded without making police reports, and, in general, relinquishing his soul in the name of gratitude. Although Frank's mafia-princess wife enjoys the perks attending his privileged status, Frank ultimately suffers from pangs of conscience fueled by the pointed words of his envious friend Danny Keegan (Jonathan Scarfe). But when Frank goes to Dellarusso and respectively asks to be let off the hook, he is rather forcibly made to realize that no one retires from the mafia and lives to tell about it. Mafia Doctor first aired March 16, 2003, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Doctor's Daughter The Doctor's Daughter
$3.48

In her first work of fiction in more than a decade, award-winning novelist Hilma Wolitzer brilliantly renders the intimate details of ordinary life and exposes a host of hidden truths. The Doctor’s Daughter is a haunting portrait of a woman coming to terms with her family history and the fallibility of memory. One morning, Alice Brill awakes with a sudden awareness that something is wrong. There’s a hollowness in her chest, and a sensation of dread that she can’t identify or shake. Was it something she’s done, or forgotten to do? As she scours her mind for the source of her unease, she confronts an array of disturbing possibilities.First, there is her marriage, a once vibrant relationship that now languishes stasis. Then there’s her idle, misdirected younger son, who always needs bailing out of some difficulty. Or perhaps Alice’s trepidation is caused by the loss of her career as an editor at a large publishing house, and the new path she’s paved for herself as a freelance book doctor. Or it might be the real doctor in her life: her father. Formerly one of New York’s top surgeons, he now rests in a nursing home, his mind gripped by dementia. And the Eden that was Alice’s childhood–the material benefits and reflected glory of being a successful doctor’s daughter, the romance of her parents’ famously perfect marriage–makes her own domestic life seem fatally flawed. While struggling to find the root of her restlessness, Alice is buoyed by her discovery of a talented new writer, a man who works by day as a machinist in Michigan. Soon their interactions and feelings intensify, and Alice realizes that the mystery she’s been trying to solve lies not in the present, as she had assumed, but in the past–and in the secrets of a marriage that was never as perfect as it appeared.Like the best works of Anne Tyler, Sue Miller, and Gail Godwin, The Doctor’s Daughter is private yet universal, luminous and revelatory–and marks the reemergence of a singular talent in American writing.
Doctor Faustus Doctor Faustus

Of the many films they made together, nowhere is the seductive power of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor better showcased than in this brilliant adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's classic play, Doctor Faustus. First dramatized in the 16th century, the legend of Doctor Faustus is the immortal tale of a German conjurer who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a life of adventure and excitement. It has proved to be one of the richest legends of our time, inspiring countless plays and motion pictures. In fact, Burton, Taylor and Peter Ustinov filmed a modern adaptation just a few years after Doctor Faustus called Hammersmith is Out. In this classic version, Burton stars as the aging scholar who makes a deal with the devil for youth, knowledge and a dazzling mistress. But when Faustus begins to regret his decision, the devil's assistant, Mephistopheles, sends Taylor as the spellbinding seductress who seals Faustus' fate. This lasting achievement is distinguished by its visual beauty and the great performances of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

The Blind Doctor The Blind Doctor
$15.98

The Blind Doctor: The Jacob Bolotin Story reveals the amazing life of a remarkable man who was born blind to poor Jewish parents in Chicago in 1888. Rejecting the conventional wisdom of his time that marginalized the blind, he was determined to be of use in the world. He fought his way into and through the Chicago College of Medicine, graduated with honors at twenty-four, and became the world's first totally blind physician fully licensed to practice medicine. By the time he was thirty, he was one of the top heart and lung specialists in the city. Jacob Bolotin s story is both fascinating and inspirational. He was one of the first to raise the awareness of the world to the plight of the blind. His speeches about his own life and the need for treating people with disabilities as capable and productive citizens were in such demand he often gave four talks a day while working full time as a doctor and teaching at three medical colleges. He also started one of the first blind Boy Scout troops in the United States. When Jacob Bolotin died at the age of thirty-six, five thousand people attended his funeral.

As the Air France 737 landed on the worn runway of the Tan Sun Nhut airport in a western suburb of Saigon and approached the rundown terminal building, I knew we were not going to be welcomed with open arms. As we passed through the arrival room, the customs officers were not disagreeable. I did wonder how they could sit in the heat and humidity in the large dingy room with one antique ceiling fan whining above them, pushing down the hot air. There were no smiles but no delays either.p'A plucky, gutsy memoir of a doctor's life well-lived, helping refugees set adrift by war and disaster. Very little has been written about the cholera epidemics that swept the tiny town of York, in Upper Canada (now Toronto), in 1832 and 1834. Based on fact, this is the story of a young doctor and his wife who struggled to save lives where facilities were almost non-existent, the only hospital had only one bathtub, pigs served as garbage collectors in the streets, and police and fire services were elementary. Whisky cost 25 cents a bottle. The population doubled every few years as poor immigrants poured in. Into this cauldron, William Lyon Mackenzie brought his ill-fated insurrection in 1837/

Alice Brill wakes up one day with a vague, but nagging sensation of unease in her chest that signals trouble. Is it her marriage--drifting along for years on auto-pilot--that's so troubling? Her unrealized aspirations as a writer? Her unsettled younger son? Or is it something about her father, once a prominent surgeon but now slipping deeper into senility in a nursing home? There is also the matter of the writer whose book she's editing, in her new profession as a book doctor, with whom a deeper involvement looms. This is a smart, beautifully observed novel about a woman coming to terms with the hidden truths of her life.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - On the 15th June 1903, in the early forenoon, a medical student, surname Redpenny, Christian name unknown and of no importance, sits at work in a doctor's consulting-room. He devils for the doctor by answering his letters, acting as his domestic laboratory assistant, and making himself indispensable generally, in return for unspecified advantages involved by intimate intercourse with a leader of his profession, and amounting to an informal apprenticeship and a temporary affiliation. Redpenny is not proud, and will do anything he is asked without reservation of his personal dignity if he is asked in a fellow-creaturely way. He is a wide-open-eyed, ready, credulous, friendly, hasty youth, with his hair and clothes in reluctant transition from the untidy boy to the tidy doctor. Redpenny is interrupted by the entrance of an old serving-woman who has never known the cares, the preoccupations, the responsibilities, jealousies, and anxieties of personal beauty. She has the complexion of a never-washed gypsy, incurable by any detergent; and she has, not a regular beard and moustaches, which could at least be trimmed and waxed into a masculine presentableness, but a whole crop of small beards and moustaches, mostly springing from moles all over her face. She carries a duster and toddles about meddle-somely, spying out dust so diligently that whilst she is flicking off one speck she is already looking elsewhere for another. In conversation she has the same trick, hardly ever looking at the person she is addressing except when she is excited.

Sophie Moen suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis and was in a wheelchair for ten years. Desperately seeking a solution, she called upon Dr. Ernie Pellegrino, who suggested joint replacement. After several surgeries, Sophie was able to walk again. This is just one of the medical success stories that author Ernie Pellegrino experienced in more than three decades of medical service. Narrated in a memoir format, A Doctor's Path includes emotionally touching examples of the selfless dedication a number of physicians demonstrate to patients. It marvels at patients who have endured incredible disabilities and their willingness to take the risks needed to improve their lives. Not all medical stories, however, have happy endings. Pellegrino gives rare insight into the people and events in his profession. His frank approach exposes some of the shameful individuals and activities that take place in patient care. He's not afraid to confront those he believes have violated the Hippocratic Oath-to practice medicine to the best of their ability and do no harm. Providing fourteen lessons, A Doctor's Path helps us understand the limitations of doctors and the medical practice, and demonstrates the will of doctors to nurture and serve humanity.

If you enjoy poetry that is thoughtful, respectful of the craft, and deeply moving, then you do not want to miss owning this book. Dr. Rosner embraces all that is in the ''here and now'', and expresses it with grace, rhythm, passion and power. It is difficult to relate his works to other contemporaries because of his unique approach to the gift of life, love and his immense grasp of the English language. For those who feel the pulse of life, the way in which Dr. Rosner expresses his selected subject matter can easily bring one to tears. His works should be digested slowly, one poem at a time, savoring each word, allowing the reader to discover his or her heart written within the pages. I eagerly await the release of ''The Doctor in the Night'', knowing that we will all share and celebrate this moment in time with a living poet that possesses the magic to touch the soul. - Kenneth Grey Hope

Doctor to the Front Doctor to the Front

The Civil War was a tragic conflict that destroyed many lives, but for those trying to save lives the tragedy was often compounded. Military doctors labored through the smoke of battle where impossible conditions and fear of infection often forced them to resort to amputation, and most operations were performed without painkillers. Thomas Fanning Wood recorded his wartime experiences as a Confederate Army surgeon, and his recollections of those events allow us to hear a distinct voice of the Civil War.As a young soldier recovering from fever at a Richmond hospital, Wood developed an interest in medicine that was encouraged by a doctor who steered him toward medical training. After only eight months of study he was made an assistant surgeon in the Third North Carolina Regiment. His narrative -- drawn from his memoirs, letters from the front, and articles written for his hometown newspaper -- presents a poignant and sometimes horrifying picture of what the Civil War physician had to face both under battlefield conditions and in urban hospitals.Wood himself spent much of his time at the front, and his vivid narrative describes both a doctor's daily activities and the campaigns he witnessed. He was present at many of the war's major engagements: he was near Stonewall Jackson when the general fell at Chancellorsville, manned a field dressing station at the foot of Culp's Hill at Gettysburg, and was one of the few survivors of the Union attack on the mule shoe at Spotsylvania when his entire division was wiped out. Wood's account also lends new insight into Jubal Early's 1864 campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley and against Washington. With its observations of medical care andtraining not found in standard histories of the war -- including a description of the examination required to become an assistant surgeon -- Doctor to the Front offers a unique human perspective on the Civil War. With their additional descriptions of key figures and events, Wood's recollections combine historical significance and human interest to show us another side of that terrible conflict.

The Devil's Doctor The true story of one man s courageous fight against unspeakable evil In May 1940, as Nazi panzers overran the Netherlands, Felix Kersten received a summons he dared not refuse. A successful and prosperous physical therapist who had ministered to the Dutch royal family, Kersten was "asked" to forsake his adopted home in the Netherlands and become personal physician to Nazi Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler. While others might have spent the ensuing years paying fearful obeisance to this monstrous and unpredictable master, Kersten discovered that he had both the means and the courage to manipulate the surprisingly naive Himmler. In doing so, he saved thousands of lives and actually persuaded Himmler to join in a plot to overthrow Himmler s hero, Adolf Hitler. The Devil s Doctor tells the incredible true story of how one brave man did everything he could, and more than he ever imagined, to turn the corrupt and maniacal Nazi power structure against itself and prevent the slaughter of thousands. This riveting and compelling tale will convince you that one person s courage and determination truly can make a difference. Praise for John Waller s The Unseen War in Europe "Superb.... Mr. Waller knows his territory." --The Washington Times "One of the most readable histories ever published of espionage, conspiracies, and intrigues that formed the backdrop against which the war s military campaigns were fought. . . . A taut, intense tale of the dashed hopes of the post-apartheid era and the small betrayals that doom a friendship, The Good Doctor is an extraordinary parable of the corruption of the flesh and spirit. It assures Damon Galgut's place as a major international talent. When Laurence Waters arrives at his new post at a deserted rural hospital, staff physician Frank Eloff is instantly suspicious. Laurence is everything Frank is not - young, optimistic, and full of big ideas. The whole town is beset with new arrivals and the return of old faces. Frank reestablishes a liaison with a woman, one which will have unexpected consequences. A self-made dictator from apartheid days is rumored to be active in cross-border smuggling and a group of soldiers has moved in to track him, led by a man from Frank's own dark past. Laurence sees only possibilities - but in a world where the past is demanding restitution from the present, his ill-starred idealism cannot last.
Doctor's Advocate Doctor's Advocate
$13.98

While his big rival and former employer, 50 Cent, squandered his success by spreading himself too thin with video games, films, and a whole lot of time devoted to the G-Unit empire, the Game spent his time working the streets with beef-minded, sometimes-epic freestyles landing on mixtapes. Every time the G-Unit versus Game beef was just about to be settled, the Game showed up late to sign the treaty, and then, when he was called out on it, he would retaliate as hard as before, bringing everything back to square one. His mentor, Dr. Dre, told him to lie low, but give the Game good advice and he'll do the opposite, as if he were compelled to do so by some unseen force (probably his mile-high ego). As the release date of his heavily anticipated Doctor's Advocate approached, things got weird. Because of the G-Unit contract, nobody was sure if the album would say Aftermath or Insterscope on the back. In the final moments, it was revealed that the cover art shamelessly references his debut, and then -- towering above it all -- there was Dre's absence from the final product, and yet the album's original, Dre-boasting title sticks like a final "screw you"/"bring it on" pointed right at the haters. As all this drama spills into the actual album and feeds the cocksure rapper's craving for chaos, it becomes obvious the "sophomore slump" wasn't enough of a challenge for the Game, and even more obvious that he's following a career path of his own. Just like The Documentary, Doctor's Advocate is obsessed with the West Coast, especially Dre. The Doctor's name is dropped incessantly, to the point it will drive haters and anyone unfamiliar with the Game's history crazy. The ghost of Dre is there in every instantly grabbing club-banger and fierce street track that arcs up to the key title track, where the Game lays it all on the table with an open letter to the producer. He uses words like "family" and "father" to pay tribute to their relationship before Aftermath and Dre associate Busta Rhymes is brought in as a guest just to amp up the desperation question. On paper, Doctor's Advocate sounds like the blueprint for the most desperate follow-up ever, with the Game treating the universe as his fanboy while constantly referencing people who aren't here and an era of which he's not a part, the golden age of the West Coast. On the crip-walkin' "Da S***" there's talk of bringing back Doggystyle and The Chronic; on "California Vacation," with Snoop by his side, he claims to be previewing Dre's so-far unreleased Detox album; and "Compton"'s old-school bounce is firmly 1993 and produced by will.i.am, who returns to his hood sound after years with the polished Black Eyed Peas. will's transformation back is just one of the magical things that happens around and in spite of the Game's flippant attitude and decidedly one-track mind. Other beat-makers like Kanye West, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, and Swizz Beatz are all on fire, and guests like Tha Dogg Pound, Nas, and Xzibit giv
Is There a Doctor in the House? Is There a Doctor in the House?
$20.98

"Will there be a doctor—a good doctor—when I need one?"This is the bedrock health care concern for Americans, encompassing as it does additional concerns about affordability, accessibility, efficiency, and specialty expertise. Richard M. Scheffler brings an economist's insight to the question, showing how shifts in market power underlie the changes we have seen in the health workforce and how they will affect the future availability of doctors. Predicting the "right" ratio of doctors to population in the future is only a small piece of the puzzle, and one that has been the subject of much forecasting, and little agreement, over the past several decades. In this concise and readable analysis, Scheffler goes beyond the guessing game to demonstrate that today's health care system is the product of financial influences in both the policy realm and on the ground in the offices of medical centers, HMOs, insurers, and physicians throughout America. He shows how factors such as physician income, medical training costs, and new technologies affect the specialties and geographic distribution of doctors. Scheffler then brings these findings to bear on a set of predictions for the U.S. and international physician workforce that extend five and ten years into the future. As part of his vision of tomorrow's ideal workforce, he offers a template for enhancing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the health care system overall. In the groundbreaking second half of the book, the author, a health policy expert himself, tests his ideas in conversations with leading figures in health policy, medical education, health economics, and physician practice. Their unguarded give-and-take offers a window on the best thinking currently available anywhere. Finally, Scheffler combines their insights with his own to offer observations that will change the way health care's stakeholders should think about the future.

Doctor Velvet Doctor Velvet

Fevered anticipation surrounded the recording of roots music phenomenon Nick Curran's third album and debut for Blind Pig Records. Attaching himself to such a pinnacle of mainstream blues as Blind Pig seemed at first a mixed blessing. While it affords the ex-rockabilly twanger greater visibility on a reputable blues label, it nonetheless raised the fear that he may have been attempting some type of ill-advised commercial crossover. One listen to Doctor Velvet, though, and such fears melt away into pure joy. Perhaps "purist" joy would be more apt, as Curran continues on his time-traveling blues odyssey. Having already proven himself as the most worthy heir to the Texas blues throne -- or at least Guitar Slim reincarnate -- Doctor Velvet finds the guitarist/vocalist channeling the spirits of Albert King, Freddy King and Otis Rush in one long, funky burst of late-'50s and early-'60s go-go blues ectoplasm. From the inspired reworking of garage rock icons the Sonics' "Shot Down" to the Louis Prima-meets-Fats Domino vocals on "Don't Be Angry," Curran has deftly expanded his vision. Throw in a cameo appearance by Jimmie Vaughan on two tracks and Doctor Velvet packs some serious blues mojo. The "State of Texas" sunglasses Curran sports on the CD cover are merely an exclamation point. ~ Matt Collar, All Music GuidePerformers: Mike Barfield - Vocals (Background); Rachel Fenton - Vocals (Background); Bobby Horton - Vocals (Background); Gary Primich - Harmonica; Nick Curran - Guitar, Vocals; Damien Llanes - Drums; Joe Morales - Sax (Tenor); Eric Mathew Przygocki - Bass, String Bass; Jimmie Vaughan - Guitar
The Good Doctor The Good Doctor

A finalist for the Man Booker Prize and Winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the region of Africa, The Good Doctor is a taut, intense tale of the dashed hopes of the post apartheid era and the small betrayals that doom a friendship. It has been greeted with enthusiastic interest around the world and assures Damon Galgut's place as a major international talent. When Laurence Waters arrives at his new post at a deserted rural hospital, staff physician Frank Eloff is instantly suspicious. Laurence is everything Frank is not—young, optimistic, and full of big ideas. The whole town is beset with new arrivals and the return of old faces. Frank reestablishes a liaison with a woman, one that will have unexpected consequences. A self-made dictator from apartheid days is rumored to be active in cross-border smuggling, and a group of soldiers has moved in to track him, led by a man from Frank's own dark past. Laurence sees only possibilities—but in a world where the past is demanding restitution from the present, his ill-starred idealism cannot last.
Is There a Doctor in the House? Is There a Doctor in the House?
$5.48

Here's a hilarious after-dinner game for contestants of all ages—though perhaps the more squeamish players should stick with gin rummy or checkers. Is There a Doctor in the House? tests each player's knowledge of medicine, and its creators claim it will also improve the medical awareness of even the most hopeless contestant. However, it will not help any player graduate from medical school. The game's components are— A 52-card quiz deck A three-panel laminated fold-out chart of the human body plus 12 reusable electrostatic stickers illustrating body organs and bones that players attach to the chart A 32-page concertina-style fold-out book of rules, strategies, and crash-course medical instruction A handsome color-lithographed metal box to hold the game's components A typical quiz card asks a question like this one: The ambulance team brings in a car accident victim suffering from shock. What do you do? A. Refer him for counseling. B. Arrange an immediate transfusion. C. Wrap him in a blanket and give him a cup of tea. Players who don't know the answer will have just as much fun as those who do—and all will get a chance to test their medical expertise.

Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, who called himself Paracelsus, stands at the cusp of medieval and modern times. A contemporary of Luther, an enemy of the medical establishment, a scourge of the universities, an alchemist, an army surgeon, and a radical theologian, he attracted myths even before he died. His fantastic journeys across Europe and beyond were said to be made on a magical white horse, and he was rumored to carry the elixir of life in the pommel of his great broadsword. His name was linked with Faust, who bargained with the devil.Who was the man behind these stories? Some have accused him of being a charlatan, a windbag who filled his books with wild speculations and invented words. Others claim him as the father of modern medicine. Philip Ball exposes a more complex truth in The Devil's Doctor—one that emerges only by entering into Paracelsus’s time. He explores the intellectual, political, and religious undercurrents of the sixteenth century and looks at how doctors really practiced, at how people traveled, and at how wars were fought. For Paracelsus was a product of an age of change and strife, of renaissance and reformation. And yet by uniting the diverse disciplines of medicine, biology, and alchemy, he assisted, almost in spite of himself, in the birth of science and the emergence of the age of rationalism.

Doctor Goebbels Doctor Goebbels
$17.98

Joseph Goebbels was possibly the most dangerous and intelligent member of the Nazi hierarchy, not excluding Hitler himself. Without Goebbels’ flair for propaganda and spectacular organization the Fuehrer might never have come to power. If Hitler was the Nazi genius of destructive evil, Goebbels was its constructive genius, for it was through his practical and intuitive understanding of the instruments of ‘public enlightenment’ that the dictatorship was built and maintained. As the founder of the Reich Chamber of Culture, the Gauleiter of Berlin and the architect of the complex machinery of modern totalitarian propaganda, Goebbels can be considered one of the most significantly evil and portentous figures of the twentieth century. A remarkable picture emerges of Goebbels’ mind as a schoolboy, student, lover, unsuccessful author and apprentice in political agitation. Interviews with his friends and family shed light on his character as a young man. This book charts the full trajectory of Goebbels’ career, showing him at the apex of his power, a master of oratory, a brilliant and cynical showman and a ruthless administrator. Doctor Goebbels also portrays the man at the end, in the Berlin Bunker, the most devoted of the Fuehrer’s henchmen, committing the last gesture of propaganda of which he was capable: the sacrifice of his life and that of his wife and six children.

"Scarcely any personal narratives of the lives of Israel's Arab minority exist. Kannaneh's fascinating exposure of this little-known subject is written with passion and authority. Essential reading for students of the Israel/Palestine conflict."---Dr. Ghada Karmi"A moving account of the plight of the Palestinians by one of them---a physician struggling to alleviate his people's lot."---Desmond M. Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus"Our libraries are full with historical and political analyses of the Palestine question, but we still have very few personal diaries and journals that help to humanize the complex reality of the torn land. This personal account is a unique and vital contribution."---Ilan Pappe"His account of the rank racial discrimination, difficult social circumstances and pervasive poverty of most Palestinians in the Jewish state is leavened by Kanaaneh's humor and his eye for striking detail. This is a truly touching book that is hard to put down."---Rashid KhalidiHatim Kanaaneh is a Palestinian doctor who has struggled for over 35 years to bring medical care to Palestinians in Galilee, against a culture of anti-Arab discrimination. This is the story of how he fought for the human rights of his patients and overcame the Israeli authorities' cruel indifference to their suffering.Kanaaneh is a native of Galilee, born before the creation of Israel. He left to study medicine at Harvard, before returning to work as a public health physician with the intention of helping his own people. He discovered a shocking level of disease and malnutrition in his community and a shameful lack of support from the Israeli authorities. After doing all he could for his patients by working from inside the system, Kanaaneh set up the Galilee Society, an NGO working for equitable health, environmental and socio-economic conditions for Palestinian Arabs in Israel. This is a brilliant and entertaining memoir that shows how grassroots organizations can loosen the Zionist grip upon Palestinian lives.Hatim Kanaaneh, M.D., completed his medical and public health degrees at Harvard in 1970. He then returned to Galilee where, in 1973, he became the Public Health Doctor of the sub-district of Acre. He is the founder of the NGO, the Galilee Society (The Arab National Society for Health Research and Services). He has written extensively on human rights.
