1986 King Cobra OMC Sterndrive?

I've been runinning this boat for 3 years without any problems at all. This weekend was run by the river application. 20 miles. Then began what sounded like the propeller cavitation and continued doing so every time I tried to increase air or past 2,600 rpm. The loss of suction type of sound and RPM growing increasingly motorized. This continuous time and again. I stop and drift for about an hour then restarted. Never happened again, fast, slow, flat top, plane down, as if it never happened. Shore oil level and look great. Is not it the hybrid driven directly from the engine? There is no torque converter clutch. Only varibles seem temp lubricant inside the unit. Is this possible? No other explanation? More puzzled than anything. Thanks for any input.

If the fine is running then I guess he picked up a plastic bag or grass in the helix making cavitate. Once closure fell and they were good to go. The next time that happens to stop and put it in reverse, then see if its past. Also You can tilt up the drive to check.
